Relationships[]

Lucas's Instructor[]

Not much about their relationship is known, but it is safe to assume that their bond was much more than a master-student relationship. While his instructor pitied Lucas, it can be seen that Lucas truly cared for his teacher. When his instructor was overwhelmed with the grief of losing his family, he had refused to eat. Lucas offered him a piece of bread, asking him what the point of abandoning his life just because he lost someone.[1] Lucas's instructor wished for Lucas not to face the same fate or loss as him, rather, he found himself concerned for Lucas's life of solitude.[2] The now-forgotten grief Lucas felt following his instructor's suicide was immense. His instructor is by far the most prominent individual featured in Lucas's past, and one Lucas relates to most now.[3]

Aeternitas de Alger Obelia[]

Contrary to his civil relations with Aeternitas's father, Lucas's views on the boy are quite brutal. After seeing the young boy's frail appearance, Lucas questioned Aeternitas's legitimacy as a descendant of the imperial family and refused to teach him magic.[4] Many years after Lucas went into a prolonged, magic-induced sleep, rumors of his relationship with Aeternitas became warped. Lucas, the Magician of the Black Tower, was reportedly enamored with Aeternitas and became his loyal servant. After Aeternitas's death, Lucas allegedly hid his existence in despair.[5] However, Lucas concludes that during his period of rest, Aeternitas had instead stolen his mana, using it to survive over the decades.[6]

Athanasia de Alger Obelia[]

Amidst their first encounter, Lucas attempts to kill the young Athanasia using magic that takes the form of bubbles. He had wanted to consume the young girl's divine beast, a creature made of her overabundant mana, to restore his own. Though, Lucas had eventually stopped his plans, noticing the unique nature of the presumably young girl. He leaves quickly after making a deal with Athanasia, saying that in place of Raven, he will take something else small and insignificant from her.[7]

When Athanasia fell unconscious due to constant contact with her divine beast, Lucas came to her aid. He stopped Athanasia's enraged father from killing the beast that she treasured, presenting himself as a young boy before the Emperor.[8] Following her recovery, Lucas was awarded the position of the Crown Princess's companion.[9] Lucas was stunned by Athanasia's brazen personality and the fearlessness she displays when facing him. He is only further intrigued by her odd behavior regarding Ijekiel and Jennette.[10]

As the story progresses, Lucas and Athanasia grow close, he would often share with her advice or tease her in moments of boredom. In one instance, Lucas became bitter at the sight of Athanasia's intimate encounter with Ijekeil, avoiding her for the next few days.[11] After accidentally encountering her in a corridor, Lucas relaces her boot, telling her he will drop by more frequently.[12] The night after Athanasia's debutante, Lucas joins her on the balcony, having come to comfort her. Twirling her hair around his finger, Lucas decides to stay for a bit longer before setting out on his journey.[13]

Lucas takes Athanasia out to the market in an attempt to cheer her up. Traveling around the capital street, Athanasia eventually learns of Lucas's creation of money, unintentionally becoming his accomplice.[14] Once back in the palace, Athanasia meets her counterpart created by Lucas. Lucas confirms that the real Athanasia is better than a fake and quickly takes away her doppelganger.[15] Before Lucas sets out on his crusade to find the world tree, Athanasia calls him a friend, surprising Lucas greatly. Reminiscing over the past, Lucas reconciles with the fact he, for the first time in his life, has something.[16]

After returning from his venture to find the world tree, Lucas's elevated mood becomes dampened by the tears of his young companion.[17] Unable to repair the curse plaguing the emperor, Lucas can only pile onto the worries carried by Athanasia. Frustrated by his lack of explanation, Athanasia is surprised when Lucas shares his knowledge of her reincarnation. Although Lucas cannot sympathize with her sense of loss or heartache, he is the only character within the story to acknowledge Athanasia's past lives.[18]

Their conversation takes a turn when Lucas comments on his overtime that seemingly goes unnoticed, an annoyed Athanasia jokingly offers him a kiss to compensate. Unexpectedly, Lucas accepts her offer, and she briefly kisses him on the cheek.[19] Concerned for her well-being, Lucas tells Athanasia to hold on and not give up. To tease her, Lucas kisses the back of her hand, causing Athanasia to become overly embarrassed.[20]

Astounded by her sudden improvement in the area of magic, Lucas agrees to teach Athanasia magic.[21] Lucas acknowledges the powerful mana Athanasia holds, reasoning that the viewing of postmortem events could be possible with her level of talent.[22] Lucas admits that his sole reason for holding off on sharing the truth about Claude's condition is out of concern for Athanasia's mental state.[23]

Ijekiel Alpheus[]

This relationship is one of competitive nature, with each of their encounters containing some sort of confrontation. Athanasia is quite clearly the subject of each discussion, which generally begins with Lucas's intervention. During their second meeting, Ijekiel visits Athanasia without prior notice and confesses his feelings for her. Before she can respond, Lucas interrupts and creates an excuse for Athanasia to leave. Ijekiel's close encounters with Athanasia aggravate Lucas; at one point, Lucas asks himself if it would be better to merely kill the young man.[24]

Jennette Margarita[]

Although encounters between these two characters are few and far between, the following can be recorded as Lucas's thoughts on Jennette's character. Having seemingly played a minor or insignificant role, Jennette was a persona with an undoubtedly unique background. Despite this, Lucas rarely paid her any mind even as she began to turn up in the center of the major controversies pegging his life. His disinterest is reflected in the way he addresses her as though she is less than human, referring to her by the alias Chimera.[25]
