Summary[]
Jennette returns to her room, reassured that the man she met in town will not reveal their previous encounters to Roger Alpheus. Meanwhile, Roger recalls when the man revealed at the debutante ball that he was Anastacius, the previous emperor, and that Jennette was his daughter. The next day, Jennette briefly spends time with Anastacius before she is summoned to Roger’s office and informed that she will be accompanying Roger to the imperial palace in Ijekiel’s stead.
